Widely considered the best movie in the “classic Trek” series of feature films, Star Trek IV returns to one of the favorite themes of the original TV series–time travel–to bring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, Scotty, Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov from the 23rd century to present-day San Francisco. In their own time, the Starfleet heroes encounter an alien probe emitting a mysterious message–a message delivered in the song of the now-extinct Earth species of humpback whales. Failure to respond to the probe will result in Earth’s destruction, so Kirk and company time-travel to 20th-century Earth–in their captured Klingon starship–to transport a humpback whale to the future in an effort to peacefully communicate with the alien probe. The plot sounds somewhat absurd in description, but as executed by returning director Leonard Nimoy, this turned out to be a crowd-pleasing adventure, filled with humor and lively interaction among the favorite Star Trek characters. Catherine Hicks (from TV’s 7th Heaven) plays the 20th-century whale expert who is finally convinced of Kirk’s and Spock’s benevolent intentions. With ample comedy taken from the clash of future heroes with 20th-century urban realities, Star Trek IV was a box-office smash, satisfying mainstream audiences and hardcore Trek fans alike. –Jeff Shannon

In the opening scene of Hamlet (1948), Laurence Olivier’s voice-over describes the play as “the tragedy of a man who couldn’t make up his mind.” But Olivier’s screen adaptation is considerably more thoughtful and complex than this thesis would suggest. Drawing on his experience playing the prince on stage at Elsinore in 1937, the legendary thespian provides the film with the patina of greatness and shows how the constitution of the formerly cheerful prince weakens increasingly under the burden of his own thoughts and inability to accept his mother’s hasty marriage to uncle Claudius (Basil Sydney). As Ophelia, Jean Simmons captures the character’s early spirit better than her gradual disintegration. Purists may bemoan the loss of Fortinbras, Rosencrantz, and Guildenstern, but these choices allow Olivier to focus more squarely on Hamlet’s plight. The winner of four Oscars? La Belle Noiseuse is a thrilling and unconventional drama about the responsibility of an artist to his vision and the conflicts that arise when such responsibility is perceived as a threat to others. Michel Piccoli (Le Doulos) delivers one of his finest, most lived-in performances as Edouard Frenhofer, a famous painter living with his artist wife Liz (Jane Birkin) on a spacious estate in the French countryside. Frenhofer has lacked inspiration for a decade and has given up on painting. The idea behind his unfinished masterpiece, La Belle Noiseuse (”The Beautiful Troublemaker”), has been seemingly unattainable for a decade; Liz was the original model for it, and Frenhofer’s exhaustion with the project has an emotional parallel to his dispassionate relationship with her.
Along comes a rising artist, Nicolas (David Bursztein), who suggests that his girlfriend, Marianne (Emmanulle Beart), a writer, could help Frenhofer jumpstart the painting’s completion. From this point, most of La Belle Noiseuse becomes a remarkable, seemingly unedited and privileged look at the development of a bond between artist and muse. Beart, fiercely brilliant, spends the majority of the film nude and continually molded into sometimes-painful positions as Frenhofer struggles–sketch after sketch, paint upon paint–to find something beyond the obviousness of Marianne’s body. As the two struggle to meet each other halfway, Liz and Nicolas feel marginalized and jealous, putting pressure on Frenhofer to disregard such personal concerns or give in to them. Adapted by French New Wave master Jacqus Rivette from a story by Honore de Balzac, the lengthy La Belle Noiseuse is fascinated by the artistic process; it is itself a patient process of watching ideas and aesthetic courage reveal themselves in the face of extraneous aversion. –Tom Keogh

Legendary Polish filmmaker Andrzej Wajda (INNOCENT SORCERERS) directed this controversial war drama inspired by his father, who had been an officer in the Polish cavalry during World War II. An underrated gem, LOTNA was the director’s first effort in color. In 1939 in war-torn Poland, a beautiful Arabian mare falls into the possession of a cavalry captain. Called Lotna (”Swift One”), the horse inspires jealousy among the other officers who all want to ride her into battle. After the captain is killed, Lotna is passed down through the ranks of younger officers until the campaign collapses when the outdated squadron is forced to stand up to German tanks. A watershed moment in Polish history, the 1939 campaign was a clear dividing line between old and new Poland.
